Why I No Longer Feel Powerless

Different issues bring each of us to the circle to protest. This is the first in a series of posts offering our participants a chance to explain why they choose to do something.

Infuriated. Powerless. Hopeless. Overwhelmed. Appalled. Shocked. Disgusted.

Those are some of the emotions I’ve felt watching this Presidential Administration unfold. Decades of planning went into a complete take-over of our government, and here it is for all to see! The incompetency, corruption, cronyism, propaganda-spewing, spinelessness of Congress, and profiting off of the presidency by his family shakes me to my core. I never thought I’d see something like this in our country. Never.

A Donald Trump is who our Founding Father’s most feared would assume power (fun fact, some Founding Fathers pushed for a co-presidency so one guy was never completely in control). I had to stop telling myself I was too busy to do something, I had to feel like I was making a difference, I had to follow the advice of one of my personal heroes, the immortal John Lewis, and get myself into some, “good trouble.”

Driving through Hamburg one Saturday I saw a group of protestors at the circle, and thought, “I need to join them.”  The following week I threw together my first sign, a simple, “RESIST!” on a hot pink background, and became part of the group. I really enjoy being around like-minded people, and have had great conversations with whomever I may be standing next to that week. And seeing our numbers grow while getting positive honks from passing cars (pick-up trucks are generally not on our side) — really makes me feel like I am helping to steer the ship back on course — because we’ve blown way, way off!
